AMINEF Hosting 58 US Fulbright Scholars at US-ASEAN Conference in Jakarta

AMINEF (American Indonesian Exchange Foundation), the binational Fulbright Commission for Indonesia, will host 58 American scholars in a conference in Jakarta, on March 18-19, 2016. The conference theme is “Issues in Southeast Asian Studies: Society, Environment and Culture.”

The 58 American scholars are current recipients of prestigious Fulbright grants that enable them to conduct research or teach in the ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. In this conference, the scholars will draw on their current research findings or experiences teaching to discuss a wide range of issues in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

“We have been asked by the US Department of State to host this event as an opportunity not only for the American scholars to enrich their Fulbright experience, but also to promote a better understanding of U.S. – ASEAN relations, and to encourage a greater awareness of ASEAN,” said AMINEF Executive Director Alan Feinstein. “As the home of the ASEAN Secretariat and the US Mission to ASEAN, Jakarta is an excellent venue to bring attention to US-ASEAN relations and to shed light on the important work that American scholars are contributing in a number of fields.”

To that end, the Jakarta conference, unlike earlier ones sponsored by the U.S. Department of State in the region, will be open to participation by the general public and the large network of Indonesian Fulbright alumni.

“We hope many Indonesians, both among the large network of Fulbright alumni here, as well as from the general public, will be interested in attending the conference,” said Feinstein. The conference, which will be held at the Fairmont Hotel, Senayan, will include parallel panels on Education; History, Religion and Rights; Biodiversity; Disaster Risk Management; Cities/Urban Spaces; Art, Music & Film; Public Health; Business & Labor; and Food Security.

Besides featuring US scholars, several renowned Indonesian scholars have also confirmed their participation in this academic event. Islamic scholar and former Fulbright alumnus Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra, OBE, will serve as a discussant in a panel discussion on History, Religion, and Rights. Dr. Agus Sari, an environmental expert formerly with the REDD+ Management Agency and also a Fulbright alumnus, will play the same role in a panel on food security.

As a binational foundation, AMINEF had help from the Indonesian Government, the US Embassy and US Mission to ASEAN in Jakarta, and the ASEAN Secretariat in planning the event and they will all have prominent representatives addressing the conference. A closing session, for instance, will be an informal talk show discussion on US-ASEAN relations and the ASEAN studies research agenda, featuring ASEAN Secretariat Deputy Secretary-General Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Dr. Rahimah Abdulrahim of the Habibie Center, Judith Moon, Minister Counselor , US Embassy, and Dr. Douglas Ramage, as moderator.

The general public is invited, up to a limited number, to attend all ten parallel panel sessions and two plenaries. Public registration information will soon be available through AMINEF’s website (www.aminef.or.id) and Facebook page (AMINEF/Fulbright-Indonesia).
