Jami Leibowitz
Award Year: 2022

Jami Leibowitz is conducting a professional project focused on increasing capacity for Virtual Exchange through the Fulbright Global Scholar Award. She runs the Indonesian portion of the project at Universitas Airlangga, hosted by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in September and October 2022.

This project aims to strengthen avenues for cultural exchange and the development of cultural understanding between nations by increasing the capacity for high-impact international education opportunities through Virtual Exchange in regions currently underrepresented in this modality. Virtual Exchange is a technology-enabled international education modality implemented between geographically separated entities that focuses on peer-to-peer interaction through facilitated dialogue sustained over time and includes collaboration at both the faculty and student levels. Through Virtual Exchange, students and faculty who may not otherwise be able to have international experiences have the opportunity to build intercultural skills essential to thrive in today’s interconnected world. While at Universitas Airlangga, students can participate in a Virtual Exchange course co-taught by Leibowitz and an instructor at East Carolina University, located in North Carolina in the United States.

Jami Leibowitz is the associate director of Global Affairs and Director of Global Academic Initiatives at East Carolina University. She is also the Chair of the Global Partners in Education Secretariat, a membership organization based at East Carolina University consisting of 50 universities in 31 countries, all working together through Virtual Exchange. She received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut. Her most recent research, presentations, and grants have focused on student learning outcomes associated with Virtual Exchange.
