Dr. Jared Whitehead
Award Year: 2024

Dr. Jared Whitehead is a professor of Mathematics at Brigham Young University who specializes in applied mathematics pertaining to geophysical applications. He has worked on improving the numerical modelling of the earth’s climate, developing rigorous bounding methods for statistical quantities in turbulent transport, and more recently novel approaches to inverse problems in data assimilation and paleo-seismology.

Jared is working with faculty in the Global Geophysics Group at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) to apply Bayesian methods to produce estimates of the location and intensities of past seismic events in Indonesia and to assist the faculty at ITB in developing accurate tsunami simulations for potential future events. With the faculty at ITB, he includes observations of earthquake shaking as well as tsunami inundation to ascertain the likely setting of these historical events to provide further insight into the tectonic setting for various parts of Indonesia, specifically focusing on the Northern Sulawesi trench, the Makassar Strait (near Nusantara, the new capital), and the Java mega-thrust.
