During October, tenth-grade classes at SMA NU Al Ma’ruf practiced English deliciously by baking chocolate chip cookies. Just a week prior, students learned about simple present tense, imperative sentences, and procedure texts. To put their knowledge to the test, ETA Iyesha Belgrave provided them with a fun challenge—following a recipe.

Before starting, the students went over each part of their recipe, labeling the title, ingredients, and directions. Then, each class was split into two groups as they worked together to follow the steps carefully. Each group meticulously measured out the ingredients before thoroughly combining their mixtures (not without eating a few chocolate chip cookies along the way!).

Students experimented with baking the cookies at different temperatures, producing both chewy, soft-baked delicacies and crunchier treats in the school’s kitchen. A vote was held to decide which of the two was better. Along the way, students documented their process through video, showing a deep understanding of following procedures in creative ways. The tenth-grade classes are extremely proud of their culinary creations and can’t wait to try their next recipe!
Iyesha Belgrave is currently teaching at SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus, Central Java.
