Ask Miss Victoria!

After observing classes for about two weeks, ETA Victoria Djou noticed that many students were confused by her sudden appearance at SMAN 5. Victoria only teaches eight English classes, so many students do not have the opportunity to speak with her in class. In addition, several students told her they felt too shy to visit her office hours and ask questions in person. To give students another way to get to know her and to practice their English skills, Victoria created the “Ask Miss Victoria” board.

On October 13, Victoria arrived at school carrying a purple foam board and asked a few of her students to help her find a suitable location for it. They eventually decided to place it in the library. There, students could write their questions for Miss Victoria on post-it notes and attach them to the board. Victoria checks the board each week for new questions and provides written responses.

Through this activity, Victoria has been able to reach more students at SMAN 5 while also encouraging them to use the English language. The board has also promoted cross-cultural understanding, as students have eagerly asked about American culture as well as Miss Victoria’s impressions of Indonesian culture.

Victoria Djou is currently teaching at SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung, Sumatra.
