English with a Side of Snacks!

This month, ETA Sydney Grafals (SMKN 8 Makassar) brought English learning to life in her 11th-grade culinary classroom through a hands-on lesson focused on procedure texts. Students began by studying the structure and purpose of procedure texts, including how to clearly explain steps, ingredients, and sequencing in English—key skills for both language learning and culinary practice.

On the second day of the lesson, students were given the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a creative and memorable way. After drafting their own procedure texts, they prepared their favorite snacks and presented the recipes to the class as complete procedure texts. Each student explained the steps, ingredients, and methods involved, using English to guide their classmates through the process.

The classroom quickly turned into an energetic, engaging learning space, filled with laughter and encouragement as students confidently shared their work and connected English to something familiar and enjoyable. The activity helped Sydney’s students see how English can be used in real-life situations, especially within their culinary field, while also reinforcing important vocabulary, sequencing, and speaking skills.

The lesson ended on a sweet note, with everyone sampling each other’s snacks and celebrating a successful day of learning—proof that sometimes the best English lessons come with a side of treats!

Sydney Grafals is currently teaching at SMKN 8 Makassar, South Sulawesi.
