Celebrating Community at the MAN IC WORDS Competition

After much preparation and anticipation, MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Kendari hosted its local WORDS competition on February 7. This year’s theme, “community,” asked students to reflect on their own experiences of connection. ETA Emiko Wu and the other English teachers were delighted to see the thoughtful and creative ways each of the nine participants interpreted the theme, incorporating personal experiences, cultural heritage, and global issues into their stories.

All three judges were deeply impressed by the artistic skill and emotional storytelling displayed by each participant. Props ranged from science experiments to balloons, and some students even added dance routines or songs to their performances! After intense deliberation, the judges reached their final decisions. The competition concluded with an announcement of the winners, followed by a ceremony celebrating each participant’s hard work.

In the weeks leading up to the event, Emiko watched her students grow steadily more confident in performing in English. She is immensely proud of the progress they’ve made and hopes that each participant walks away inspired and more assured in their own abilities. Emiko is also looking forward to cheering on the first-place winner at the national competition in Jakarta.

Emiko Wu is currently teaching at MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi.
