During the month of Ramadan, ETA Jackson Harris joined a class iftar (breaking of the fast) with students from Class XI Perhotelan 2 at SMKN 1 Kokap, alongside co-teacher Pak Prima. The gathering provided an opportunity for Jackson to engage with students outside of the formal classroom setting and participate in an important cultural and religious tradition.

Throughout the event, students and teachers shared a meal together after sunset, creating a warm and inclusive environment that strengthened relationships within the class.
Jackson observed and participated in the customs surrounding iftar, gaining a deeper understanding of Ramadan and its significance in students’ daily lives. Informal conversations during the gathering allowed students to practice English in a natural, low-pressure setting, while also sharing their experiences and traditions.

By taking part in this community-centered event, Jackson supported the Fulbright ETA program’s goals of fostering mutual cultural understanding and building meaningful connections between American ETAs and their host communities.
The iftar gathering highlighted the importance of cultural exchange beyond the classroom and reinforced the role of the ETA as an active and engaged member of the school community.
Jackson Harris is currently teaching at SMKN 1 Kokap, Yogyakarta.
