Dr. Robert Cowherd is a Fulbright Specialist collaborating with colleagues at Universitas Nasional Surakarta (UNS) in Solo, Central Java, from April 14 to May 10, 2026.
During this period, he will support the development of curricular content for architectural history and theory courses, as well as the work of graduate students and faculty. While in Solo, he will present lectures and engage in discussions on recent developments in the interplay between history and theory, the “global turn” in architectural history teaching, and the important contributions of Indonesian history and theory to the broader international community.
Dr. Cowherd is a Professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses on architectural history, urban studies, and design, and also supervises graduate student research. He has written extensively on architecture and urbanism. His recent publications include “Drawing Histories,” to be published by MIT Press; “Lessons from the Indonesian Kampung,” published by Universidad Politechnica Catalunya, 2026; and “Batavian Apartheid: Mapping Bodies, Constructing Race,” a piece in the Southeast of Now journal, published by NUS Press, 2021.
His prior connections with the Fulbright Program include a Fulbright Scholar Grant for research in Medellín, Colombia, and a Fulbright Study/Research Grant for research in Bandung and Jakarta. He holds a Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture and an Urban Design Certificate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union.
