US Fulbright Scholar in Thailand Dr. Maryann Bylander Discusses Migrant Workers in Visit to Singapore

RTP M.Baylander Feb 2018 rev 1

Dr. Maryann Bylander traveled to Singapore in the end of February to give public talks at two institutions: Singapore Management University and the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore.  At each institute, Dr. Bylander presented on her ongoing research with Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand. Her presentation, entitled “Absurd Journeys: The Costs of Becoming Legal” described the quasi-legal routes migrants negotiate in order to obtain documents, and the costs/debts they incur as part of this process.  More broadly, Dr. Bylander’s work is concerned with the changing nature of migration regulation in Southeast Asia, and how new forms of regulation are impacting migrant workers.
