AMINEF annually awards scholarships and fellowships to Americans and Indonesians to study, teach, or conduct original research in a variety of disciplines. Grants are competitive, and selections are made by binational selection committees, with approval from the partner J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board in Washington, DC, for Fulbright awards and by US Department of State partner agencies for other exchange programs. Awards to study in the US generally cover tuition and fees, textbooks, monthly living costs, international airfare, and health insurance.
The grants to Indonesians comprise Fulbright Scholarships for master’s and doctoral-level studies at US universities for two and three years, respectively, and grants for Indonesian doctorate holders to carry out six months of research at a US university. The same categories of awards are available in a special program of DIKTI-funded Grants for Indonesian Lecturers, a joint Fulbright Program collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education, which provides the bulk of the funds. It is open only to current lecturers at Indonesian universities. Note: The DIKTI-funded Fulbright Grants for Indonesian Lecturers program has not been extended beyond the Award Year 2021-2022. Prospective applicants are encouraged to explore alternative opportunities such as the Fulbright Doctoral Degree (PhD) Scholarship.
Under the category of Fellowships are several non-degree programs, of which four are Fulbright exchange programs: the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program allows Indonesian English or Indonesian-as-a-foreign-language teachers to teach Indonesian language at an American university while taking courses relating to language-teaching and American studies. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States for mid-career professionals selected based on their potential for leadership and their commitment to public service in the public or the private sector. Furthermore, the Fulbright/Kennedy Center Fellowship for Performing Arts And Science and the Fulbright-National Archives Heritage Science Fellowship, newly introduced in 2024, provide unique opportunities for scholars and researchers.
Four other non-degree fellowship programs are sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) but are not Fulbright programs per se and are managed by different partners. The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers (Fulbright DAI, formerly called ILEP), managed by IREX, brings outstanding primary and secondary school teachers from around the globe to the United States to further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States. Northern Virginia Community College administers the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program in cooperation with the Community College Consortium (CCC). It allows selected students to spend one year studying at accredited US community colleges and gain practical hands-on experience. The Global Undergraduate Exchange Program, or Global UGRAD, is administered by World Learning on behalf of ECA. It allows undergraduates from Indonesia to experience the US educational system, enhance their knowledge, and explore US culture. Finally, the Fulbright US–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative, a relatively new program administered by the US Mission to ASEAN and the Council of International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), provides opportunities for scholarly and professional research in the US for nationals of the ten ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, on ASEAN- or US-ASEAN-related topics.
Generally, candidates who have not had extensive recent US experience will be given selection preference for all AMINEF programs. This opportunity is open to everyone, regardless of background. All qualified individuals are welcome to apply. We particularly encourage applications from qualified candidates beyond major cities in Java, such as those from eastern Indonesia.
