
Dan Slater was a Fulbright Specialist at the Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) from 16 – 29 July 2023. The project’s main goal was to lead a training program for graduate students in the methods of comparative historical analysis. The visit also included two research talks at Jakarta-area universities, a session on graduate-student training with UIII faculty, and a feedback session with UIII graduate students on their current thesis projects.
Dr. Slater is the James Orin Murfin professor in the Department of Political Science and director of the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) at the University of Michigan. He specializes in the politics and history of democracy and authoritarianism, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. His books include From Development to Democracy: The Transformations of Modern Asia (Princeton 2022, with Joseph Wong); Coercive Distribution (Cambridge 2018, with Michael Albertus and Sofia Fenner); and Ordering Power: Contentious Politics and Authoritarian Leviathans in Southeast Asia (Cambridge 2010).
