A Day at English Camp

This month, ETA Ruby Mead participated as a guest speaker in SMAN 9 Makassar’s English Camp. This multi-day event marked Ruby’s second visit to the school. It featured various activities and sessions designed to enhance students’ English language learning and broaden their exposure to American culture.

The “Converse With Miss Ruby” session began with a Q&A, during which students asked Ruby questions about cross-cultural learning, her life in America, her experiences in Makassar so far, and tips for improving their English language skills. Ruby then asked SMAN 9 participants about what they had learned during their time at camp, gauged their interest in multiculturalism and studying abroad in the future, and discussed the richness of Makassarese and Buginese culture. Students who actively participated by either asking or answering questions were rewarded with prepared oleh-oleh.

Ruby then read aloud a fictional passage called “The Mouse Deer and the Crocodile” twice before quizzing students on the story’s plot, characters, and morals. Students and teachers alike enthusiastically conversed to uncover greater meanings – both obvious and subtle – hidden within the narrative. The session concluded with a photoshoot and an exchange of gratitude (as well as Instagram profiles to keep in touch!). Ruby’s time at SMAN 9 allowed her to connect with Makassar high school students beyond her own community, share her culture as the students shared theirs, and promote a greater dialogue of cross-cultural understanding and relationship-building.

Ruby Mead is currently teaching at SMKN 10 Makassar, South Sulawesi.
