A Season of Gathering in South Sulawesi

In March, Muslim communities worldwide celebrated Ramadan, a month of fasting and a time when daily life becomes centered around evening gatherings, reflection, and shared meals.

ETA Sydney Grafals (SMKN 8 Makassar) took part in several iftar gatherings with teachers, students, and friends throughout the month, where everyone gathered to break their fasts in the evening with some delicious local food.

These evenings provided opportunities to spend time together outside of school and to better understand how Ramadan shapes community life in South Sulawesi.

As Ramadan came to a close, Sydney traveled to her counterpart’s home village for Idulfitri, the holiday marking the end of the fasting month. During the visit, she met members of her counterpart’s extended family, visited neighboring homes, and joined in the day’s meals and celebrations. The experience offered a closer view of how Idulfitri is observed through family visits, hospitality, and shared traditions.

Participating in both Ramadan and Idulfitri allowed Sydney to continue building relationships beyond the classroom while gaining a broader understanding of local customs and daily life in the community. She left each gathering with a greater appreciation for Muslim culture, South Sulawesi hospitality, and usually a very full stomach!

Sydney Grafals is currently teaching at SMKN 8 Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan.
