ETA Adeena Ali kicked off the lesson with an engaging This or That icebreaker. Students chose between a series of hobbies and foods by walking to different sides of the room. The quick decision-making energized everyone and prepared them to dive into the day’s lesson.
Next, the class explored the concept of an Analytical Exposition, focusing on crafting a strong thesis statement. ETA Adeena and her co-teachers emphasized that a thesis should clearly state a position and include two to three reasons to support it. To practice, the students annotated thesis statements on the board, analyzing each to break down its structure and purpose.
The highlight of the lesson came when students were divided into groups to debate the topic, “Should uniforms be required at school?” Each group collaborated to develop reasons for their stance, crafting well-structured thesis statements that reflected their opinions. Through this hands-on approach, students learned how to form and support a thesis with logical, thoughtful arguments to help them with their homework at the end of class.
By the end of the session, students had a clearer understanding of the importance of thesis statements in argumentative writing and practiced applying them in a fun, collaborative setting.
Adeena Ali is currently teaching at SMAN 2 Tanjungpandan, Kepulauan Bangka Belitung.
