Anna Holmquist
Award Year: 2019

Anna Holmquist is a PhD candidate in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley.

As a 2019-2020 US Student Fulbright Researcher, she is working with Universitas Tadulako and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) on a project titled, “Ancient processes versus environmental change in shaping spider communities of Sulawesi”. This research aims to document taxonomic, functional and genetic diversity of spiders across Sulawesi to better understand how complex diversity is formed and maintained, influenced by the interplay of historical processes and modern dynamics. For that purpose, she will conduct fieldwork across biogeographically important regions on Sulawesi.

Anna Holmquist’s research interest in the processes involved in the formation and maintenance of biological diversity began in her undergraduate career at North Carolina State University. As an undergraduate, Anna studied the effect of urban warming upon communities of spiders found in street trees throughout the city of Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in Zoology and minor in Entomology. Following graduation, Anna joined the Evolab at the University of California: Berkeley (UCB); this lab group focuses upon the study of evolution on island systems, with a particular emphasis on arthropod groups.
