Dr. Beth Clark-Gareca is an associate professor and director of the K-12 Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at the State University of New York (SUNY), Binghamton. From August 28 to September 26, 2023, Dr. Clark-Gareca served as a Fulbright Specialist in the capital city of the Indonesian province of Southeast Sulawesi at Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Kendari. The objectives of her project were to explore the use of technology and digital tools in higher education and K-12 educational contexts and to assist faculty, in-service, and pre-service teachers in integrating technology into their language classrooms. Educational apps, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT) were focal points of her discussions and presentations at IAIN-Kendari as well as in other schools and universities in the surrounding areas.
At SUNY, she prepares graduate students and in-service teachers to work with young, multilingual learners in K-12 public schools. Her current research interests relate to learner assessment, teacher education and supervision, and ways to infuse innovative, technologically-engaging teaching practices into global English language classrooms. Dr. Clark-Gareca is grateful to have had multiple opportunities to teach outside the United States, including as a Fulbright Scholar in Argentina in 2015 and an English Language Specialist in Bahrain in 2023.
