Dr. Eric A. Vance
Award Year: 2023

Dr. Eric A. Vance is an associate professor of applied mathematics, director of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), and the global director of the LISA 2020 Network, which comprises 35 statistics and data science collaboration laboratories in ten developing countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Tanzania, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa). He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a two-time winner (2020 and 2022) of the ASA Jackie Dietz Award for the best paper of the year in the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education, and the 2023 winner of the ASA W.J. Dixon Award for Excellence in Statistical Consulting—a lifetime achievement award for which he is the youngest winner by more than 20 years. He has traveled through 91 countries and keeps these experiences in mind as he collaborates toward building statistics and data science capacity for sustainable development.

As a Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia for 2023-24, Dr. Vance is collaborating with colleagues at Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) to 1) translate the ASCCR framework for teaching and learning collaboration (www.bit.ly/asccrframe) into Indonesian language and culture to understand what about his collaboration skills training works as is in Indonesia and what needs to be changed/adapted, i.e., what is universal about collaboration in statistics and data science and what is dependent on local culture; 2) launch a new course in statistical collaboration at IPB adapted to Indonesian language and culture; 3) establish a statistical collaboration laboratory (“stat lab”) at IPB modeled after the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis (LISA) at CU Boulder and connected with the LISA 2020 Global Network (www.lisa2020.org); and 4) conduct workshops on interdisciplinary collaboration and data science education at universities and institutions across Indonesia. The intended outcomes of this project are an improved, internationally relevant model for teaching and learning statistics and data science collaboration, determining lessons learned and best practices for creating new stat labs in Indonesia, and a robust understanding of data science education in Indonesia to help build and bolster their culture of data-driven inquiry.
