Dr. Jaeshil Kim is a linguistics professor at Liberty University and a Fulbright scholar at Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, East Java. Her teaching interests encompass syntax and morphology, introduction to linguistics, linguistics for language teachers, and second language acquisition. Jaeshil’s research focuses on referentiality and plurality in classifier languages, the syntax and semantics of classifiers, definiteness and specificity in human languages, and language teacher empowerment in Southeast Asian countries.
With a PhD in linguistics from the University of California, Irvine, Jaeshil has dedicated her career to linguistics education. She taught at UC-Irvine for three years before joining Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she now directs the linguistics program. Her academic journey also includes a master’s degree in linguistics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Beyond academia, Jaeshil has shared her expertise worldwide. She taught syntax and morphology at the Summer Institute of Linguistics and conducted English teacher workshops and seminars in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Her experiences have highlighted the need to train and empower local English teachers where resources are limited.
Jaeshil is passionate about teaching linguistics, fostering networks, and collaborating with fellow researchers to apply linguistic principles to understand linguistic phenomena in various languages. Her recent collaboration with Dr Ross, a Biblical Hebrew professor, resulted in the publication of their article, “Revisiting the Hebrew Definite Article: A Reference Hierarchy Model,” in the Journal of Semitic Studies in 2023.
