Dr. Joan Edwards
Award Year: 2024

Dr. Joan Edwards is a Fulbright Specialist at the University of Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia – UI) College of Nursing in Jakarta, West Java, from October 7 through October 26, 2024.

The desired outcomes of the four project activities are to establish a baseline for current nurse participation in research within Indonesia and increase the number and/or percentage of research publications in nursing journals (including international journals) by UI nurse researchers (faculty and students) within the next 12 months after this Fulbright Specialist visit. Dr. Edwards will be conducting presentations and workshops with nurse faculty and students to lay the groundwork for achieving these desired outcomes.

Dr Edwards is a professor emerita at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) College of Nursing and Director Emeritus of the TWU Center for Global Nursing (CGN) in Houston, Texas, USA. She was previously a Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia (2011-2012). Her assessment of initial nursing programs for the Indonesian government assisted in national strategic plan formulation to achieve congruency with the 2009 WHO Global Standards for Initial Education of Professional Nurses and Midwives. Dr. Edwards was inducted as a Fellow by the American Academy of Nurses in 2015. In 2019, she was awarded AWHONN’s Distinguished Professional Service Award. Recent global work in nursing has included participation on the Sigma Theta Tau team, which assisted Indonesia in the creation of its first SIGMA Chapter – Alpha Beta Lamba at-large in 2022. She also has collaborated on numerous nursing publications with research team members from Peru, Spain, Kenya and the USA.
