Dr. Boopathy and the Institut Teknologi Bandung or ITB (Life Science & Technology) will collaborate under the Fulbright Specialist program from July 31 – August 13, 2016. Dr. Boopathy will be a keynote speaker at the ASEAN Microbiology and Biotechnology 2016 Conference in Bali, an ITB organized event. He will also give lectures to undergraduate and graduate students of Life Sciences Department and Chemical Engineering Department in ITB, and seminars to students and faculty members of the Chemical Engineering Department in ITB.
This is his second time as a Fulbrighter in Indonesia. The first time was in 2006 where he was awarded as a Fulbright Senior Scholar.
Dr. Boopathy, a distinguished service professor of biological sciences, is studying ways to help sugarcane farmers eliminate the practice of sugarcane burning.
In addition to teaching and research, Boopathy reviews research proposals for the National Science Foundation, US Department of Defense and US Department of Energy. He also edits the International Journal of Biodeterioration and Biodegradation.
Before joining Nicholls State University in 1999, Boopathy worked as a scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, a US Department of Energy laboratory managed by the University of Chicago. He studied the bacterial degradation of trinitrotoluene, otherwise known as TNT at that institution.
