Engaging Students Through Trivia at SMKN 1 Kokap

During the final week of classes before final exams and the semester break, ETA Jackson Harris organized English-language Trivia Days in both regular English classes and the English Club at SMKN 1 Kokap. The activity was designed to encourage active language use in a fun, low-pressure setting while reinforcing listening, speaking, and teamwork skills. Modeled after a classic American trivia game, students worked in teams of four to five and competed by answering all questions in English. To earn points, teams were also required to respond verbally in English, promoting confidence and accuracy in spoken communication.

The trivia categories included Animals, American Movies, Fruits, and a lighthearted category titled “Mr. Jackson,” which allowed students to learn more about their ETA while practicing comprehension skills. This mix of familiar and culturally themed topics helped students stay engaged while introducing elements of American culture in an accessible way. Winning teams received small prizes, including American flag keychains, which added excitement and motivation to the activity.

The Trivia Days successfully created an inclusive and energetic classroom environment, encouraging students to participate actively and support one another. Through this activity, Jackson supported the Fulbright ETA program’s goals of strengthening English proficiency, fostering cultural exchange, and building positive classroom relationships.

Jackson Harris is currently teaching at SMKN 1 Kokap, Yogyakarta.
