English Storytelling at SMKN 3 Palangkaraya

February featured the successful hosting of the local WORDS competition, an English storytelling competition designed to showcase students’ creativity, confidence, and growth at SMKN 3 Palangkaraya. Led by Fulbright ETA Nia Dufeal, the event brought together 16 student participants who each presented original stories about their lives and communities in English. In the week leading up to the competition, Nia organized and facilitated a series of workshops to help students develop their ideas, strengthen their language skills, and learn effective storytelling and performance techniques. These sessions provided students with the tools and encouragement needed to express themselves authentically and confidently.

On competition day, students delivered powerful and engaging performances, sharing stories that ranged from academic achievements and personal connections to music to imaginative ghost stories that captivated the audience. Each performance reflected dedication, vulnerability, and pride in their experiences. At the conclusion of the event, three winners and three runners-up were recognized for their outstanding work, celebrating both excellence and effort. Among them, the first overall winner earned the opportunity to represent Palangkaraya at the national WORDS competition in Jakarta this April. The competition stood as a testament to the students’ hard work and to the impact of creative, student-centered language learning.

Nia Dufeal is currently teaching at SMKN 3 Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan.
