Having the experience as a Fulbrighter was truly an unforgettable one for me. America turned to be a different story afterward. I was there right on the 9/11 tragedy. I was a Moslem with the same name as the primary suspect of the attack–Mohammed Atta. Yet I was surprised there was no negative impact on me in the society whatsoever. No offensive words, conducts, etc. I remained their friend regardless of my religion, my name. I felt completely safe among them. I was then drawn into the nationwide sadness that they felt. Later, I discovered that the population of American Moslem is among the largest in the world. I slowly understood the beauty of American multicultural society, the society maturing after hundreds of years of painful process. I found this nation as a friendly and warm nation regardless of their political standing. As a Moslem, I will always respect them. As an Indonesian, I will always be their friend.
