Fulbright Scholar Fredy González talks about his book on Chinese immigrants in Mexico and ongoing research project at NUS

Fulbright Senior Scholar to Taiwan, Dr. Fredy González, (University of Colorado Boulder/Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica) delivered two talks on his research on Chinese overseas in Latin America and around the Pacific Rim.

The scholar, a faculty member at University of Colorado Boulder, delivered one talk at the National University of Singapore concerned his book, “Paisanos Chinos: Transpacific Politics among Chinese Immigrants in Mexico” published in 2017 by the University of California Press.

The book tracks Chinese Mexican transnational political activities in the wake of the anti-Chinese campaigns that crossed Mexico in 1931. The book depicts the ways in which transpacific ties helped Chinese Mexicans make a claim to belonging in Mexico and challenge traditional notions of Mexican identity and nationhood.

Dr. González delivered a second talk at the history department of Nanyang Technological University. He talked about his current research on the Chee Kung Tong, an overseas Chinese political party aiming to register as a political party for much of the twentieth century. He is currently affiliated with the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica in Taiwan for this research project.
