AMINEF was proud to learn that American Studies expert Prof. Dr. Ida Rochani Adi, S.U., who was a Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Research grantee in 2000 at the University of North Carolina, has been installed as full professor at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta.(Cited from article inKompas today, 30 September 2015 , p. 11. Here is the link to the full news at the UGM website [in Indonesian]: ugm.ac.id).
Dr. Ida Rochani Adi was inaugurated as a professor of American studies at the English Department, Faculty of Humanities, at UGM, on Monday, 28 September at the UGM Senate Hall. In her inaugural oration, she spoke about the need to redefine American studies in the context of globalization. American nationalism and the emergence of awareness of diverse ethnic and cultural identities led Americanists to themselves rethink their approaches to studying American culture. As a result, in the 1990s a new strain of “New American studies” or “Transnationalist American Studies” emerged, Dr. Ida said in her speech.
