Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, Prof. Margaret Lewis visited Hong Kong in March 2018 as part of Fulbright’s Regional Travel Program (RTP).
Prof. Lewis was grateful to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Universities Service Centre for China Studies for hosting her visit where she was given the opportunity to share her experience as a visiting scholar at National Taiwan University School of Law focusing on justice reforms in Taiwan and their impact on human rights.
In addition, the visit was a welcome chance for candid conversations regarding cross-strait relations and the how tensions between Taipei and Beijing have human rights implications. Hong Kong is only a short flight from Taipei, and her visit made clear that scholars and students should take even greater advantage of this close physical proximity to engage in collaborative projects.
Furthermore, this visit underscored the importance of people-to-people ties and reaching out to students who are at the beginning of their careers. Afterwards, a student from mainland China sent an email thanking Prof. Lewis for her talk and hoping that they could discuss academic issues in the future, which Prof. Lewis looks forward to doing so.
