Fulbright Scholar to Present His Research on Lost Tonalities in Bali’s Vocal and Instrumental Music

Fulbright Senior Scholar Dr. Edward Herbst will present the result of his research on the rediscovery and revival of lost tonalities in the vocal and instrumental music of Bali in a seminar entitled “Bali 1928: Rekaman Bersejarah Odeon & Beka” on July 12.

The event, which is co-organized by STIKOM Bali (Institute of Computer and Information Management) and Bentara Budaya Bali, will start with a Cultural Dialogue from 15:00-18:30 local time, followed by performances from 19:00-21:00 at Bentara Budaya Bali (Jl. Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra 88A, Ketewel).

Dr. Herbst is an American scholar whose research and writings have focused on Balinese arts since the 1970s. He studied traditional music and dance from several famous Balinese teachers, including I Madé Gerindem, I Nyoman Kakul and I Madé Pasek Tempo.

With the Fulbright award Dr. Herbst returned to Indonesia in 2014 to explore Balinese music from the 1920s. Commercial 78-rpm recordings from the period “provide an unprecedented aural window into a decade when three factors converged: the trauma of colonialism, decentralization of the arts and the enticements of tourism,” he stated.

Besides Dr. Herbst, the Cultural Dialogue will also feature distinguished ethnomusicologist, Dr. Anthony Seeger, who was for many years director of the Smithsonian Folkways and is an expert on early recordings of traditional music world-wide, as keynote speaker. AMINEF’s Executive Director, Alan Feinstein, will share some of his experiences with philanthropic efforts in cultural preservation and public education in Southeast Asia.

In the seminar, Dr. Herbst and the other speakers will address the importance of documentation and repatriation of lost and nearly extinct traditions as an effort to preserve a nation’s historical memory and esthetic.
