Geoffrey Dougherty, Professor of Physics and Medical Imaging at California State University (CSU) Channel Islands, spent two weeks of his Fulbright Specialist award at Diponegoro University (Undip), and two weeks at Airlangga University (Unair), both in Java, Indonesia in March-April 2018.

Professor Dougherty carried out the bulk of the planned activities which include 3-day workshops on medical image processing, one day applications and academic writing as well as general lecture to a wider audience on imaging. The faculty were eager to discuss their research interests, and how imaging could impact them. They were particularly interested in receiving tips to improve their academic writing.

In addition, Prof Dougherty discussed the curriculum and established formal contacts between the Head of Department, Deans and Vice Deans at Undip, Unair and CSU. Drafts of Memoranda of Agreement (MoAs) on faculty and student exchange and on research cooperation were drawn and currently under consideration at all the institutions involved with the aim to form to an extensive Memoranda of Understanding.

There were informal meetings held with the students and a session that included faculty too advising them of AMINEF administered Fulbright programs and the opportunities available. These discussions are continued via email due to shortage of time.

Overall, Prof. Dougherty felt happy with the collaboration he had with Undip and Unair, “The faculty at both institutions were very welcoming and hospitable, and the rapport was excellent.” He is pleased that both host institutions were enthusiastic in continuing this collaboration and that they have identified a number of areas for future collaboration, both in the short and medium term. They are looking forward to further exchange visits, including faculty and student exchanges.
