In December 2022, supported by the Fulbright Regional Travel Program (RTP), Dr. Compton-Lilly, a Fulbright US Scholar in Taiwan, visited the National Institute of Early Childhood (NIEC) in Singapore to share findings related to a bilingual, Indigenous book-making project in Taiwan. During the visit, she also shared information about an innovative teacher education program at the University of South Carolina. The indigenous project addressed the lack of culturally and linguistically responsive books for teaching Indigenous children and the need to implement culturally responsive instruction for children in Indigenous communities. In Taiwan, the project involves the continuing creation and dissemination of books created through ongoing collaborations with Indigenous communities.
The teacher education program at the University of South Carolina features a network of Professional Development Schools and a fully embedded elementary education program in which courses are taught in local elementary schools. Faculty members at the NIEC have expressed an interest in visiting the University and observing this program. In addition, Dr. Compton-Lilly hopes to return to Singapore in 2024 to continue this important work with colleagues.
