LaTasha Starr is a Fulbright Specialist at University of Petra from August 4 to 15, 2025.
LaTasha Starr, Professor of Practice Engineering Academy at Dallas College, A & M Texas University, and Petra Christian University in Surabaya successfully collaborated in a project focused on incorporating AI in engineering studies from August 4 through 16, 2025.
The objective of the project was to incorporate AI into the teaching methodologies in mechanical engineering study.
Starr taught about AI and modern engineering concepts and led workshops for mechanical engineering lecturers, introduced topics like enhancing the curriculum with AI, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and the use of Digital Twins, simulation, and virtual reality in modern labs.
She also delivered lectures to both current mechanical engineering students and alumni on subjects ranging from career development in AI and autonomous systems to the importance of systems thinking and the integration of AI in everyday engineering.
Additionally, she conducted a university-wide seminar for all engineering and informatics faculty members, addressing the critical question, “Will AI replace Engineering?” and three workshops on enhancing mechanical engineering with AI.
“These efforts collectively aimed to prepare both educators and students for the evolving landscape of technology by providing them with practical knowledge and a forward-looking perspective on the role of AI in engineering”, Starr said.
“This inspired our faculty to foster greater creativity and develop more hands-on projects for students”, Dr. Ekadewi Anggraini, lecturer at the Mechanical Engineering Department at Petra Christian University, said.
Starr also engaged with local high schools, including Happy Family School, Cambridge School, and Mawar Sharon School, to share knowledge and promote the field of engineering to younger students.
“Moving forward, I hope my partnership with Petra Christian University will continue virtually, through a variety of initiatives, such as online guest lectures and workshops on the latest developments in AI, engineering, and digital technology and a virtual mentorship program”, she added.
