Helly Minarti

Dr. Helly Minarti is the head of programs for the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) and an independent scholar who has served as a guest-lecturer at several universities in Indonesia and abroad.

She earned bachelor and master’s degrees in media studies and international journalism from Universitas Indonesia and City University (London, UK) respectively in 1994 and 2003. She earned her doctorate in dance studies at University of Roehampton (London, UK) in 2014.

Her research and articles have been published in various books and journals, and presented in various national and international forums. For her US ASEAN Research project, she proposes look at “Analysing Selected Asian Contexts of Contemporary Dance: Entangled and Transnational Practice of Curatorship/Dramaturgy in the US” at The City University of New York.

Research in the US will help, since the role of curators and dramaturgs is well accepted there, and since there is also an interest there in Asian performing arts. She sees arts and culture as significant in advancing democratic processes, carrying messages that might not be easily carried in other media, in the Southeast Asia region. She hopes to able to establish a connection with a strong group of researchers with interests in dance and other performing arts.
