Into the US: Celebrating International Education Week and Exploring the History of Thanksgiving

When International Education Week, Thanksgiving, and Native American History Month all fall in the same month, there’s no shortage of opportunities for cultural exchange. This November, International Education Week took place from November 17 to 21, giving ETA Sydney Grafals the chance to collaborate closely with her site mate, ETA Ruby Mead, to host a combined IEW and Thanksgiving celebration in Makassar.

Sydney invited her English Club students from SMKN 8 Makassar to join students from the neighboring school, SMKN 10, at the American Corner for an afternoon of international and cultural learning. Guest speaker Mr. Fadhil from EducationUSA Indonesia, based in Makassar, hosted a talk–show–style panel discussing the differences between Indonesian and American schools, the experiences of ETAs studying and working abroad, and the numerous resources available to Indonesian students interested in pursuing opportunities overseas.

To bring the holiday spirit to the program, Sydney and Ruby also delivered an engaging presentation on Thanksgiving, introducing traditional dishes and customs while thoughtfully addressing the holiday’s complex historical context and emphasizing the importance of recognizing Indigenous perspectives when learning about the Thanksgiving story. Students enjoyed exploring both the reflective and lighthearted aspects of the celebration, including the Macy’s Parade, Turkey Trots, and trying homemade macaroni and cheese, as well as “turkey” Oreos.

The panel closed with an opportunity for students to explore the American Corner resources, play games, and get to know one another. Students left with new connections, a deeper understanding of US culture and history, and clearer pathways for pursuing international education.

Sydney Grafals is currently teaching at SMKN 8 Makassar, South Sulawesi.
