The American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF), the Fulbright Commission in Indonesia, seeks an EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.
Applications are invited from American and Indonesian citizens for the position of Executive Director of the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF), located in Jakarta, Indonesia. As the Fulbright Commission in Indonesia, AMINEF manages a range of educational exchanges between the United States and Indonesia, including primarily the Fulbright Program, the US government’s flagship academic exchange program.
The Executive Director oversees an annual budget of more than $12 million and reports to a binational Board of Management that includes representatives of both governments. AMINEF receives funding from both government and private sources.
The Executive Director serves as chief executive officer of AMINEF, reporting to the Board of Management, and is in frequent communication with responsible agencies of the Indonesian and United States governments. The Executive Director takes a leadership role in fostering the Fulbright mission ideals in Indonesia. These include the following activities:
- Developing AMINEF’s objectives, programs, and projects, subject to Board approval
- Leading a team of professionals to manage bilateral academic exchange between the two countries
- Advancing long-range planning and annual budget and program planning informed by trends in international and higher education
- Serving as secretary of all meetings of the AMINEF Board of Management
- Overseeing the process of recruitment, selection, orientation, placement, and monitoring of Indonesian and American Fulbright grantees and awardees of other U.S. Government-sponsored programs managed by AMINEF within guidelines set by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in Washington, DC
- Providing regular reports on the strategies and accomplishments of AMINEF to the Board of Management and other audiences as requested
- Participating in academic conferences and seminars in Indonesia and the US to promote AMINEF and the Fulbright Program
- Developing and expanding AMINEF’s alumni network and communications programs
- Overseeing and being responsible for AMINEF’s fiscal accounting system
- Maintaining close communications with AMINEF’s stakeholders in the US and Indonesian governments, including but not limited to the US Embassy in Jakarta, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in Washington, the Ministry of Education and Culture, Innovation and Technology, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Indonesian and American educational institutions and others
- Representing AMINEF, Fulbright, and other exchange programs in public forums as a public speaker, conference paper presenter, or moderator
- Promoting Fulbright and other exchange programs to Indonesian and American audiences to increase recruitment of potential candidates from diverse backgrounds
- Advising US and Indonesian government representatives on the administration of Fulbright programs and potential areas for expansion and adaptation to the changing local context
The successful candidate should:
- Be a US or Indonesian citizen (applications from other nationalities are not eligible)
- Hold an advanced degree (master’s required, PhD preferable) in such fields as education administration, international education, or a similar field. Commensurate experience will be considered, including graduate-level study or research, preferably in both the United States and Indonesia
- Demonstrate management ability, including 10 years of administrative experience in an educational institution, non-profit organization, or government agency, and evidence of successful employee mentoring and supervision of a staff of 10 or larger
- Have experience in financial planning and budgeting within a complex organization
- Have experience in administering international programs and a record of effectiveness in dealing with foreign government agencies
- Have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as competency in Indonesian and English
- Be familiar with the education and research systems in both the United States and Indonesia
- Have direct experience of inter-cultural or academic exchange and respect for the challenges and sensitivities inherent in a cross-cultural environment
The AMINEF Executive Director position requires a “hands-on” manager willing to exercise leadership, oversight, and active management of Commission programs and staff. The successful candidate will be a proven leader with a vision for promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange between the United States and Indonesia. A demonstrated ability to set priorities is essential. Travel within Indonesia and annual consultations in Washington, DC, are required. Applicants must demonstrate effectiveness when interacting with American and Indonesian academics, government officials, and business leaders. The Executive Director must also be able to manage and direct an international exchange program compatible with the changing needs of both countries, ensuring that AMINEF fulfills the purposes of relevant binational agreements.
A two-year renewable contract will be offered, subject to a review of the Executive Director’s performance upon completion of the first year of service. Salary and benefits are competitive and negotiable.
