Dr. Macdougall is Professors of Political Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
I taught at two University of Indonesia campuses in 1989 and 1991. In Depok my subject was International Relations in Southeast Asia, while in Rawamangun I had a course in American Foreign Policy. Since my return to the U.S. ,I’ve published a scholarly report on my search. I’ve also had the opportunity to lecture publicly on the progress apparent in Indonesia and to advise local business people who are preparing to invest there. At my university I’ve worked to expand the range of opportunities for Indonesia graduate students in the field of engineering.
I even had a chance to return ti Jakarta in 1991 to research the policy-making activities of economicsts of the New Order. This opportunity was sponsored by two renowned Indonesia economists, Dr. Sadli of KADIN and Dr. Thee Kian Wie of LIPI.
Overall, I,d say that my Fulbright experience provided an incomparable chance to recharge my batteries and rediscover my enthusiasm for teaching. In America I’d never experienced the high level of respect for my professionals status that enjoyed in Indonesia. To attend my classes and counting sessions, students struggled daily with the heat, rain and traffic Jakarta. They grappled with a foreign language and a new communications style. And many of them demonstrated an enthusiasm for my academic subjects that I had almost forgotten.
Students visited my home to discuss ideas and borrow books. They studied with me to prepare for the Model ASEAN meeting in Indonesia and Malaysia. Junior faculty of the Department of International Relations solicited contribution from various organization to create an American Reading Room where students can read relevant political science materials, use a computer and converse comfortably with thesis advisors. Both students and faculty in this young department worked heroically to learn more about American approaches to their discipline. My admiration for their dedication inspires me to emulate their academic efforts.
