Kaylana Mueller-Hsia is an independent researcher affiliated with the Indonesia Jentera School of Law in Jakarta. Under the U.S. Fulbright Student Researcher grant, she is studying how the documentation of human rights violations via digital technologies is altering the work of Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia, the National Commission on Human Rights in Indonesia. She aims to research best practices to ensure a privacy-protective, secure, and victim-centered approach to human rights.
Kaylana hopes that this research, which will investigate how Indonesian human rights institutions adapt to technology’s role in creating harm and seeking justice, will inform future work in law and policy at parallel American institutions.
Previously, Kaylana worked at the Brennan Center for Justice in New York and the Mayor’s Office in San José, California, on issues at the intersection of technology, civil rights, and civil liberties.
She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and honors in international security studies from Stanford University.
