Lisa Miles
Award Year: 2017

Paperbark artist Lisa Miles is awarded a Fulbright Student Research Award for a project “Bark Paper, Plant Dyes, and the Book Arts in Indonesia.” As a book artist and papermaker, Lisa use beaten bark papers as the core of my art-making practice. Do you know how bark papers are made? They are made by beating the cooked or fermented inner bark of Paper Mulberry trees with a stone or wooden beater. Through the project, Lisa hopes to gain deeper understanding about Indonesia’s bark paper techniques. Lisa, who earned an MFA in Book Arts from University of Iowa, is working with Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) for this project. She hopes to complete her Fulbright research by September 2018.
