This month, ETA Iyesha Belgrave hosted the local WORDS competition at SMA NU Al Ma’ruf. Ten students from grades 10 and 11 participated in the storytelling event, competing for a chance to advance to the national competition. The stories were carefully crafted around the theme “My Community.” The students took part in workshops throughout January and early February to prepare their storybooks and short performances.

At these workshops, they had the chance to work on grammar, pronunciation, content, and overall performance. Students also had the chance to utilize props and wear costumes to elevate their work. Most importantly, students were encouraged to have fun.

The competition was judged by three judges, including fellow ETA Alice Rodi and Fulbright ILEP recipient Ibu Sri Murtiyani. After a morning of intense competition, tenth grader Rishta Ishana Zheelvania took first place with her compelling story and performance. Rishta will be competing in the national WORDS competition in Jakarta this April, presenting her story on the big stage and making her school proud.
Iyesha Belgrave is currently teaching at SMA NU Al Ma’ruf Kudus, Central Java.
