
Michael Kirkpatrick Miller is a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Cornell University, where he studies the history of masculinity, empire, and religion in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
As a 2020 Fulbright-Hays DDRA Fellow, Michael will work towards completing his dissertation, “Modifying Men: Crossing Religion and Masculinity in Eastern Indonesia, 1870-1942.” This project analyzes the history of religion, gender, and sexuality in Ambon and Manado during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Dutch East Indies. Michael will conduct five months of archival research in the Netherlands and three months of archival research in Jakarta, Ambon, and Manado. While in Indonesia, he is affiliated with Dr. Desi Prianti and Brawijaya University in Malang.
Michael is also working on a secondary research project about horses’ history across Eastern Indonesia and the Pacific. At Cornell, he teaches courses on the global history of food, the history of animals, and the history of masculinity in modern Asia. His research has been funded by the American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) and the Library of Congress. He is also the creator and former host of the “Gatty Lecture Rewind,” a podcast project from the Southeast Asia Program at Cornell.
