MS. SJAMSIAH ACHMAD’S LAUNCHED MEMOIR: “SJAMSIAH ACHMAD: SUN FROM SENGKANG-WAJO”
Ms. Sjamsiah Achmad was member of the AMINEF Board of Management in 1995-1999. On March 20, 2013, her memoir entitled “Sjamsiah Achmad: Sun from Sengkang-Wajo” was launched in Jakarta depicting her 80 years of service to the public.
Ms. Achmad graduated from New York University School of Education in 1962 and has undergone numerous training in the fields of education and science policies and management as well as special briefing about the United Nations policies and administration, both in Indonesia and at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and in Vienna.
She was Head of the Bureau of International Relations of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (1967-1978), at which time she initiated the establishment of the Committee on Science & Technology of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN-COST). During this period, she served as steering committee’s secretary as well as chair of organizing committee of several bilateral, regional and international conferences in Science & Technology for Development, among others US – Indonesia Workshop on Food, 1968; the Application of Science & Technology for the Development of Natural Resources, 1972; Appropriate Technology for Development as the Major Theme of the Pacific Science Association Inter Congress, 1977.
From 1978 to 1988, she served as a program officer then senior program officer at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Vienna. She retired from United Nations in 1988 and appointed as Assistant Minister for Education, Office of the State Ministry for the Role of Women in Indonesia (1988-1995).
She concluded her assignment as Assistant Minister in the Ministry for the Role of Women in September 1995, and returned to her original institution, the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI).
She is recipient of several awards, among others, Prime Minister’s Award as a Model Civil Servant in 1960, State Award for Outstanding Work in the Promotion of International Co-operation for the Advancement of Women and State Award for over 40 years continous service as civil servant without any misconduct, including 11 years secondment to the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Vienna in 1995; APEC–WLN award (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation – Women Leaders Network) as one of the founding members in 1997; State Primary Medal for Meritorious Service in the Initiation of the ASEAN Cooperation in Science and Technology and Hilda Van Suylenburg International Award from the International Training Center for Women, Amsterdam in 2000.
