AMINEF is saddened at the passing of life-long environmental activist and Fulbright alumna Nurul Almy (Emmy) Hafild, 63, on July 3, 2021, in Jakarta.
For more than 30 years, Ms. Hafild dedicated her life to environmental issues and marginalized communities. Time Magazine named her one of Time’s Heroes of the Planet in 1999.
Ms. Hafild was awarded a Fulbright Master’s Degree Scholarship to study environmental management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991 – 1994.
In 2017, she became the Chairman of Maritime Affairs of the Central Executive Board of the National Democrat Party (Nasdem). Her previous roles included the Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia until 2015, the Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), and the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry advisor. In 1995, she co-founded Transparency International Indonesia (TII), an anti-corruption organization based in Jakarta, where she served as its Executive Director for three years.
Through his Facebook obituary post, Fulbright alumnus and Indonesian poet Eka Budianta says, “Indonesia has lost a formidable fighter, the defender of the environment and true truth.”
Minister of Environment and Forestry Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, on her Facebook, remembers Ms. Hafild as: “… a good friend, an environmental activist, and a critical discussion partner.”
We at AMINEF extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband and two daughters.
