Procedural Text in Action

In the first week of February, ETA Jason Yan at SMK Krian 2 Sidoarjo began teaching procedural texts to 10th graders at his school. To bring the topic to life, Jason, along with his co-teachers, designed a hands-on activity that challenged students to go beyond simply writing about a process: they had to actually demonstrate one in front of the class.

The activity pushed students to think carefully about sequence, clarity, and word choice, as their instructions had to be clear enough for classmates to follow along in real time. From everyday tasks to creative how-tos, the classroom was transformed into an engaging showcase of student knowledge and language skills. Some students chose to create a video, while others actually brought in materials for the class to enjoy as a whole.

One of Jason’s favorites was enjoying some rujak, an Indonesian delicacy of fresh-cut fruit with peanut sauce, prepared by one of the groups. The lesson was a strong reminder that procedural text is not just an academic exercise; it is a genre rooted in real-world communication.

Jason Yan is currently teaching at SMK Krian 2 Sidoarjo, East Java.
