Putu Wijaya is a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence teaching Theatre at the University of Wisconsin in 1985-1986.  He is a renowned short story writer, novelist, theatre and film director.

Kompas daily newspaper announced on June 26, 2014 that Putu Wijaya was awarded a Tribute for his dedication to creative work (Penghargaan Kesetiaan Berkarya).  Putu continues writing for various media, in spite of the fact that, because of his illness, he can only type using his thumbs as the other fingers are somewhat paralyzed.
