School Camping Trip in the North Sumatran Highlands

ETA Brady Allen joined students and teachers on a camping trip to Lau Kawar in North Sumatra in late September. From dirt roads to incredible highland views, the journey via motorbike from SMKN 1 Kutalimbaru was an adventure. At camp, Brady bonded with students and teachers over many hours of card games. He even attempted to perform a newly learned card trick, which, unfortunately, did not go as planned.

The following morning, Brady and a few teachers set off on a small rowboat to explore Lau Kawar. They shared many laughs on their journey across the lake, especially when their inconsistent rowing forced the boat to spin in circles. Later in the day, they all set off to return to school. Brady was in shock at what he saw on the route back. Shortly after leaving the camp, Mount Sinabung came into view. The horizon, dominated by the active volcano, left Brady speechless.

Periodic stops to take in the view—and, of course, a quick picture—were sprinkled throughout the ride back. The trip was unlike anything Brady had experienced before. From the amazing landscapes to the conversations around a game of cards, it was one of those trips that Brady would talk about for a long time to come.

Brady Allen is currently teaching at SMKN 1 Kutalimbaru, Sumatera Utara.
