Sejal earned a bachelor’s degree in Public Policy with a minor in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies from Duke University and later completed a master’s degree in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University as a Schwarzman Scholar. Her academic and professional work focuses on migration governance, refugee policy, and the legal frameworks that shape labor mobility and displacement.

Her Fulbright research examines migrant worker governance in Indonesia, focusing on how the country’s 2017 migrant worker protection reforms are implemented in practice at national and provincial levels. Through legal and policy analysis and interviews with government officials, NGOs, migrant worker associations, and migrant families, her project investigates how labor protections are understood, enforced, and shaped by bilateral agreements and ASEAN frameworks. The project aims to generate evidence-based recommendations to strengthen protections for Indonesian migrant workers and contribute to broader migration governance scholarship.

She is conducting this research in collaboration with Dr. Saru Arifin at Universitas Negeri Semarang. After Fulbright, Sejal will attend Duke University School of Law.
