SMAN 1 Kalianda WORDS Competition

On December 12, SMAN 1 Kalianda hosted its local WORDS Storytelling Competition. Over the course of three weeks, ETA Charlie Cushman worked with students to prepare them for the competition, which required students to write and perform an original story centered on the theme of “My Community.” The first step was drafting a story, so Charlie led several sessions focused on the creative writing process. After students completed their first drafts, Charlie led a peer-review workshop in which students took turns reading each other’s stories and offering constructive feedback. Throughout the writing and review process, students sharpened their English language skills, storytelling skills, and literary analysis skills. Once students completed their written stories, they displayed their artistic talent by creating beautiful illustrations to accompany them. Finally, students spent several days practicing their performances, during which they recited their stories from memory while using a prop or displaying a special talent.

Ultimately, 12 students competed in the local competition, wowing the audience with their wonderful stories and English abilities. Stories covered topics such as friendship, family, the importance of building relationships, and following one’s dreams, and one student even played a song on her guitar during her performance! Charlie was incredibly proud of every student, as they all showed amazing talent and bravery by writing and performing a story in a second (or third!) language, no less. He cannot wait to watch the local champion compete in the national contest in April.

Charles Cushman is currently teaching at SMAN 1 Kalianda, South Lampung.
