In November 2024, Fulbright ETA Hira Baig continued her English teaching project with the teachers at SMKN 5, fostering mutual understanding and promoting English proficiency among educators from various departments. The English class, which meets three times a week, provides a supportive and flexible environment for teachers and staff to develop their language skills.
Each session is structured to maximize engagement. For example, in one class, participants discussed their passions and why having a passion is important for themselves and their students. This discussion was complemented by a listening activity featuring a motivational video that introduced real-life vocabulary in context. Participants then collaboratively read the transcript aloud, focusing on pronunciation and fluency, before practicing new vocabulary through interactive exercises. The class ended with a Kahoot quiz, sparking friendly competition while reinforcing the day’s learning objectives.
To accommodate teachers’ schedules, Ms. Hira designs two unique lessons weekly, ensuring fresh material for each session. A shared Drive offers participants access to class materials, transcripts, and additional resources, empowering them to continue learning outside class.
The program has created a vibrant community of learners, with teachers from diverse backgrounds—math, nursing, library staff, and more—connecting over their shared goal of improving English proficiency. This initiative enhances language skills, strengthens cross-cultural ties, and builds confidence within the school community.
Hira Baig is currently teaching at SMKN 5 Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
