Thanksgiving in Indonesia!

ETA Alice Rodi’s highlight of November was being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with RUS teachers, students, and staff – and even a fellow ETA.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Alice brought the holiday to SMK Raden Umar Said. The first event of the day was a feast in one of the teachers’ offices. In addition to green beans, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and an apple crumble, the teachers and staff also enjoyed macaroni and cheese, which they made in class with the help of Alice. After delivering Thanksgiving leftovers around the school, Alice celebrated the holiday all over again with the SMK RUS English Club.

Wednesday’s English Club opened with a slideshow on Thanksgiving in the US, during which Alice explained the true origins of the holiday, highlighting important aspects of Indigenous history and culture. Following this presentation, the club brainstormed ways to celebrate the holiday while simultaneously honoring Native Americans. Each student then shared one thing they were grateful for, including friends, family, and the school community. The group enjoyed their feast while watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from a previous year. Alice also introduced her students to the National Dog Show, which is one of her favorite parts of the holiday.

The following day, Alice was also invited to a Thanksgiving dinner at ETA Iyesha’s house, where a large group of community members enjoyed a delicious homemade meal together.

Alice Rodi is currently teaching at SMK Raden Umar Said Kudus, Central Java.
