Timothy Lie
Award Year: 2025

Timothy Lie is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, and a Master of Science in Biology. Lie conducts research at the Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine (CMEM), studying the intersection of mitochondrial biology and SARS-CoV-2 infection. His work has contributed to four publications, reflecting his dedication to scientific inquiry and discovery. His passion for chemistry earned him the prestigious Madeleine M. Joullié Award, and he has fostered academic growth as a learning assistant in Penn’s Department of Chemistry for three years.

As an Indonesian-American, Lie is deeply committed to advancing healthcare access for underserved communities. He serves as a medical interpreter at the Jefferson Chinatown Clinic and the ADROP Unity Clinic, which provide free care to undocumented Philadelphians, particularly within the Indonesian community. A Philadelphia Mayor’s Scholar and QuestBridge National Scholar, he is dedicated to both academic excellence and service.

Beyond his scientific and medical endeavors, he is also a passionate musician and an arts leader. He served as co-musical director of Full Measure, Penn’s first and only Christian a cappella group, where he arranged and directed performances that blended faith and music, aiming to inspire and uplift both the campus and broader community. He also volunteers as a church musician, using music for worship and outreach.

In Indonesia, Lie will conduct research at Universitas Indonesia, exploring the role of mitochondrial DNA variants in dengue severity and investigating how mitochondrial function is permanently altered after dengue virus infection. His work aims to enhance understanding of viral pathogenesis and inform future therapeutic strategies. Upon returning to the U.S., he will pursue a medical degree and continue advocating for equitable access to healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
