Award Year: 2023

Trey Spadone is a Fulbright US Student Researcher affiliated with Universitas Gadjah Mada. Alongside Dr. Dyah Rahmawati Hizbaron, Trey is studying public perceptions of two active volcanoes, Mount Merapi and Mount Agung, with densely populated communities living on and around them. His primary goals are to explore how local communities perceive volcanoes and their effects and analyze how these perceptions influence people’s responses to preparedness measures and evacuation orders. Further, Trey seeks insight into the four-way dynamics among government institutions, hazard mitigation organizations, academia, and local communities and how this information can improve disaster mitigation policies and practices.

Trey graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor’s in anthropology. He studied abroad in Indonesia through the School for International Training and the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program as an undergraduate.
